CLOSING & MERGING CHURCHES

"Under Jen's leadership, our organization  examined resentments that had long simmered in our relationships with other organizations, and she did so in a way that allowed all sides to be heard and understood. As a result,  we strengthened our relationships, both inside and outside of the organization."

- The Rev. Dr. Terri Bays

Helping Churches Discern Whether to Close, Merge, or Carry on Faithfully.

Churches across denominations are facing difficult and faithful questions about their future.

Many congregations are not lacking in devotion or commitment—but they are stretched thin. Increasingly, time, energy, and financial resources are consumed by maintaining buildings, navigating clergy shortages, or managing rising benefit and insurance costs. Over time, attention shifts away from worship and mission toward survival. When that happens, even deeply faithful communities can feel stuck.

I help churches slow down, listen carefully, and discern their next faithful chapter.

Church Discernment Support at Every Stage

There is no one-size-fits-all answer for churches in decline or transition. Some congregations discover renewed life through redevelopment, shared ministry, or creative partnerships. Others discern that their most faithful path forward is to merge with another church or to close with intention, care, and clarity.

I work with churches at any point in this process, including:

  • Early conversations in declining congregations asking, “Is revitalization still possible?"

  • Facilitated discernment processes focused on mission, sustainability, and legacy

  • Exploration of the myriad models of shared or collaborative ministry (intra or interfaith)

  • Discernment around church mergers

  • Planning and support for church closure

  • Guidance and training for judicatories, dioceses, synods, or denominational bodies supporting congregations in transition

This work is not about rushing toward an outcome. It is about helping churches make thoughtful, faithful decisions rooted in their values and calling.

Pastoral, Organizational, and Legal Guidance for Church Transitions

Church transitions require attention to people, governance, mission, and compliance.

My approach integrates discernment facilitation, mediation, and legal experience. This whole-system lens allows churches to move from prayerful reflection to clear, executable next steps.

My legal background is particularly important when churches need support with:

  • Drafting memoranda of understanding for sharing ministries or merging parishes (within or across denominations)

  • Structuring church mergers or shared-use agreements

  • Navigating governance, property, and asset questions

  • Addressing denominational or canonical requirements

  • Carrying out the legal, canonical, and pastoral work of closing a church

Legal clarity matters—but how these steps are taken matters just as much. Done well, the process itself can be pastoral, transparent, and grounded in care.

Centering Mission, Not Buildings

Many churches reach a point where disproportionate energy is spent maintaining buildings or sustaining clergy structures rather than focusing on worship, service, and mission. Discernment work helps congregations ask honest questions about what they are being called to steward—and what they may be called to release.

This work helps churches return their focus to God and mission, rather than remaining trapped by systems that no longer serve their purpose.

Honoring Legacy and Caring for People

At its heart, this work is about legacy and care. Every congregation has a story worth honoring. Decisions about closure, merger, or redevelopment should be made with deep respect for the people who have loved, served, and sustained the church—often across generations.

When transitions are handled with clarity and compassion, churches can:

  • Bless what has been

  • Care well for their members

  • Steward assets faithfully

  • Create space for new expressions of mission

I work with churches across denominations because these challenges are widely shared. What unites them is the desire to be faithful, to care for people, and to make decisions that align with their deepest values.

Discernment Begins with a Conversation

I work with churches and denominational bodies across traditions to support thoughtful discernment, clear decision-making, and faithful next steps.

If your church is discerning its future, you do not have to navigate this alone. Contact me through the form or by calling me at the number below and together we will figure out the right next step.
